Installation at Middlesborough Art Week 2023

Planktochrome installed at Middlesborough Art Week, 2023

Planktochrome was selected to be part of Middelsborough Artweek 2023 where the plankton photsynthesised, absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. Visitors to the space were invited to print a planktochrome and add it to the shelves on the wall, creating a wall graph of people's interactions with the work, the colour of the plankton and CO2 levels throughout the exhibition.

Pressing the button automatically prints a monochrome green image of the current plankton colour timestamped with the CO2 concentration in the apparatus.

A monitor in the space displayed an animation of the last 24 hours of data from Planktochrome. This offered a different speed of engagment with the work that enabled visitors to see the changing CO2 levels over a day and build a relationship with the actions of the plankton. The animation was programmed in javascript and played through a full screen web browser enbaling it to update each time the animation played so the same sequence of frames was never repeated.
